Coochiemudlo Island is a small island in southern Moreton Bay and is quite close to Brisbane. In the local Yuggera language it means red rock – owing to the iron rich rock exposed on the southern side of the Island. It is mainly a holiday island for Brisbanites, and was visited by Matthew Flinders in 1799.

We’d been doing quick little visits into Oxley Common for years but only saying gidday to the horses at the front, or having a quick look around the creek and picnic area – in fact it became one of my favourite places to write the script for Honeysuckle Way ~ but this was the first time we cycled into the whole of it, and boy oh boy was it wonderful – this was only a few months before we left Brisbane and I really regret we hadn’t done this sooner because it really is a magical place, and I don’t think our photos here really do it justice.

I recently received a second hand copy of Where to Ride South East Queensland and have spent a fair bit of time going through it. There’s a lot of rides in locations I never would have thought about , which is one of the best things about the book – but it also gives you lots of information on the difficulty and gradient of the rides – which is really useful when planning a ride with small children.

When Jenny and I first got together one thing we quickly learnt was that we had both done a lot of cycle touring ~ in fact her a lot more than me. I also soon learnt that she was planning a trip back to her home country of Ireland in mid ’99 – and after we decided we’d get married well it became pretty obvious what to do!

After Tale of Two Men wrapped up I moved to Brisbane in February 1989 and the first thing I wanted to do was stage a sketch comedy show. After all those years of loving Python at school and writing my own sketches, now was finally my chance.

After our successful Toowoomba to Gladstone trip I was keen to do another one but it turned out the only people who were available was David and myself. So we planned the trip – from Finley (where he lived just north of the Murray River) – around Western Victoria and then to Melbourne then straight up the centre of Victoria and back to Finley. We ended up dubbing it ‘The Pleasure and Pain Bike Tour’ after the Divinyls song that was popular at the time – it was a very enjoyable trip, but there was some very hot dry weather at times.

So after the success of our trips at school we were all keen to do a bigger ride once we left school – Stephen, John and myself all finished in ’84, and David who was in the year below us finished in ’85. I can’t recall what happened at the end of ’84 but it was a big rush with the HSC and I had a family holiday at the end of that year as well, so that year was out for a cycle tour so we settled on the end of ’85.
