When Jenny and I first got together one thing we quickly learnt was that we had both done a lot of cycle touring ~ in fact her a lot more than me. I also soon learnt that she was planning a trip back to her home country of Ireland in mid ’99 – and after we decided we’d get married well it became pretty obvious what to do!

Western Victoria – January 1987

After our successful Toowoomba to Gladstone trip I was keen to do another one but it turned out the only people who were available was David and myself. So we planned the trip – from Finley (where he lived just north of the Murray River) – around Western Victoria and then to Melbourne then straight up the centre of Victoria and back to Finley. We ended up dubbing it ‘The Pleasure and Pain Bike Tour’ after the Divinyls song that was popular at the time – it was a very enjoyable trip, but there was some very hot dry weather at times.

Toowoomba – Gladstone Bike Ride – Dec 1985

So after the success of our trips at school we were all keen to do a bigger ride once we left school – Stephen, John and myself all finished in ’84, and David who was in the year below us finished in ’85.  I can’t recall what happened at the end of ’84 but it was a big rush with the HSC and I had a family holiday at the end of that year as well, so that year was out for a cycle tour so we settled on the end of ’85.
